At TWN-UMN’s first networking event over Zoom, we got to hear from several powerful women that work for Amazon. During the event, the women speaking inspired self-confidence and ambition in those who attended. Mentioned during the event were specific initiatives within the company that worked to create a space for women. In this blog I will be doing more research on the Women In Finance Initiative, Body Positive Peers, and Amazon Women in Engineering, affinity groups that work to create a safe space for women within the company of Amazon. A brief overview of these groups, along with information on other groups within Amazon, can be found here.

Women In Finance Initiative

The Women In Finance Initiative, also known as WiFi, is a space for women in finance to network and develop as a group of empowered women. This group holds networking sessions along with leadership talks and other community engagement activities. You don’t even need a background in finance to join this group because as long as you are up for the challenge, they will give you all the support you need to create your own path at Amazon. Because Amazon is a global company, there are opportunities around the world and being a part of this group connects women from across the globe.

Body Positive Peers

Body Positive Peers, also known as BPP, seeks to create a safe environment for every body type for both their employees and customers. This group was founded in 2018 on the principles of intersectionality, working to break the stigma around bodies while maintaining awareness of ability, ethnicity, gender identity, and race. This group recently had a virtual community outreach event at Augsburg University where they talked about weight discrimination and provided more resources for those who attended. More information, along with a recording of the event, can be found here. Groups like this are important to have in any business in order to be able to have an open conversation about weight-based issues in our society today. I think it is very admirable that Amazon has a group like this that also works to educate people, such as college students about to enter the workforce.

Amazon Women in Engineering

Amazon Women in Engineering, also known as AWE, is a networking group for women in the male-dominated industry of engineering. This group also focuses on leadership training and community outreach, specifically to promote STEM careers to young women. In 2018 this group hosted an Hour of Code event, an hour-long event that provides an introduction to computer science and demystifies code by teaching the basics, to 4000+ children. More about the Hour of Code event can be found here.
